Index of US economy slips but growth higher-report

Friday February 6, 10:30 am ET

NEW YORK, Feb 6 (Reuters) - A drop in mortgage applications and higher jobless claims pushed lower a leading index of the U.S. economy, a report showed on Friday.

The Economic Cycle Research Institute, an independent forecasting group, said its weekly leading index (WLI) fell to 132.6 in the week ended Jan. 30 compared with the preceding week's upwardly revised reading of 132.8.

The annualized growth rate, a four-week moving average that evens out weekly fluctuations, jumped to 11.5 percent from 10.8 percent.

"It's impressive that the weekly leading index growth rate has remained in the double digit territory for more than a year -- this has not happened since 1983-1984 and clearly points to robust growth ahead," said ECRI managing director Lakshman Achuthan.
