Dollar, gold mixed in Europe

LONDON -- The U.S. dollar was mixed against other major currencies in European trading Wednesday. Gold also was mixed.

The euro was quoted at $1.2712 in late European trading, up from $1.2702 Tuesday. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro traded at $1.2770.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared to late Tuesday, included 105.75 Japanese yen, up from 105.57; 1.2431 Swiss francs, up from 1.2344; and 1.3341 Canadian dollars, up from 1.3290.

The British pound was quoted at $1.8733, up from $1.8651 late Tuesday and just a fraction off its 11-year high of $1.8734, hit during Tuesday's trading.

In midday trading in New York, the dollar bought 105.39 yen, and the pound was worth $1.8789.

Gold traded in London at $408.60 bid per troy ounce, up from $408.30 on Tuesday.

In Zurich the bid price was $406.60, down from $408.00.

Gold fell $3.10 in Hong Kong to $405.95.

Silver closed in London at $6.42 bid per troy ounce, up from $6.39.
