Greenspan says must provide skills for better jobs

Thu February 12, 2004 12:18 PM ET

WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Thursday America must be concerned not only about the loss of jobs due to international trade, but also due to internal productivity and inferior education.

"I think our real concern should not be the question of whether or not trade is increasing internally or externally, I think we have to be very concerned about the fact that there are very substantial (numbers of) people who are obviously losing jobs not only because of trade but also because of internal productivity," Greenspan said in response to a question from the Senate Banking Committee.

"What is happening in the United States is that we are finding that the lesser skills are turning out to be in surplus supply, and therefore the real wages of our lower income are going nowhere," he said, adding that American students were falling behind other nations somewhere between the 4th and 12th grades.

Greenspan also said the wage gap between U.S. and foreign software jobs was likely to narrow in the future.
