Greenspan says expects US productivity to slow

Thursday February 12, 11:10 am ET

WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Thursday he expects the productivity of U.S. businesses to slow soon, making it likely they will hire more workers.

Greenspan told members of the Senate Banking Committee that more efficiency has made it possible for the U.S. economy to grow without adding many new jobs. But he called it "atypical" that new hiring has lagged economic growth by as much as it has, and said he expects hiring to pick up.

"It seems very likely that the extraordinary pace of productivity is almost surely going to slow," he said in response to questions after testifying on the state of the U.S. economy.

He said he expects to see "employment expanding at a reasonably good clip within a short period of time."
