U.S. mortgage applications fall-MBA survey

NEW YORK, Feb 11 (Reuters) - The number of Americans applying for a home loan fell last week despite a slight drop in borrowing costs, according to an industry survey. The Mortgage Bankers Association said its market index, a measure of weekly mortgage activity, fell 6.8 percent in the week ended Feb 6 to 797.8. At the same time, the trade group's purchase index, a gauge of new requests for loans to buy homes, fell 9.4 percent to 402.2. Meanwhile, MBA's refinancing index, a gauge of demand for home loan refinancings, slipped 4.7 percent to 3,099.1 even as 30-year mortgage rates fell 0.03 percentage points last week to average 5.60 percent.
